Project Description
Freshwater ecosystems are among the most affected by anthropogenic pollutants worldwide. The primary goal of this DFG-funded project is to elucidate the fate of both classical and emerging organofluorine pollutants in Europe's aquatic ecosystems and to identify the key factors influencing their accumulation in fish. Employing advanced analytical techniques, the project aims to quantify several tens of anthropogenic chemicals throughout the aquatic food web in various lotic and lentic environments. A physiological assessment, combined with chemical analyses of pollutants in a range of biota (from plankton to top predators), and the determination of trophic positions using stable isotope analysis, will shed light on biomagnification processes within the food chain and provide crucial data for assessing risks to human health. The project is conducted in close collaboration with the Institute of Microbiology of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague and the Institute of Hydrobiology in České Budějovice, Czech Republic.
